Iceland 2014

A trip to (hopefully) see the Northern Lights
Ocean view (?) from our hotel room on arrival. Beautiful sunny day. Golden Circle tour - today it has decided to be a snowy day. Heading to Thingvellir - the oldest functioning parliament in the world. We are standing on the North American tectonic plate. The Eurasian plate is in the distance, slowly drifting apart. Walking at Thingvelir - Unesco world heritage site where the two tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart
Icelandic parliament Althingi was founded in this area in 930 AD Thingvellir Farm is a relatively modern building in classic Icelandic form, which now serves as a country residence for the President of Iceland Keeping warm at Thingvelir Peningagjá (The Money Chasm) is a deep fissure filled with crystal clear spring water; people throw coins into it from the bridge that lies across. The coins give off strange reflections as they drop through the water, it is said that if you can follow the coin all the way down until it comes to rest on the bottom, your wish will come true.
Gullfoss is a massive waterfall on the river Hvita which originates in the glacial lake Langjokull. Gullfoss means 'golden falls' because the glacial sediment in the water turns the falls golden in the sunlight. Closer view of Gullfoss. Beautiful falls Alternate view of Gullfoss falls
Gullfoss falls video Skalholt church, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops Wall mosaic inside Skalholt church. Organ in Skalholt church
Girls are excited to find Iceland, in Iceland. Can't keep Vikki away from shoe shopping! The new Beatles Strum my thing, baby
Amazingly I got Rachel out of the shop without spending any money. Rocky? no, Vikki Very wet day in Reykjavik But who cares
No bread to feed the ducks and swans :-( Fed up with all the rain - nah, we're having too much fun. Jonathon won't join our gang. Splitter! Monument to the Unknown Bureaucrat - a man with a weight on his shoulders.
Reykjavík Old Harbour View from our hotel on a rainy day! Our hotel :-) Rachel was keen to go here - something about wanting to see a "real" one.
A weird selection, but interesting. Puffin is quite dark and whale is quite tough, but still tasty. This is in the Tapas bar - too much for Jonathon 2014-03-24 20.45.00
